Raised Lewis and Skye, a native Gaelic speaker and son of the manse. Graduated (Medicine) Glasgow, 1959; specialised in pathology and became Professor of Pathology, University of Glasgow, 1984-2000. President, Royal College of Pathologists, 1996-1999; Chair, Academy of Medical Royal Colleges, 1987-1999; member, General Medical Council, 1998-2001.
Special interest in diseases of the liver: editor of 12 books – notably Pathology of the Liver (now in 5th edn and known as MacSween’s Pathology of the Liver).
Hon DSc(Glas), FRS(Ed), knighted 2000.
Retirement activities include charity work (inter alia, Chair, Tenovus Scotland), gardening and travelling.
