The Royal Philosophical Society of Glasgow was founded in 1802, when the term ‘philosophy’ meant knowledge in the broadest sense. The Society provides stimulating lectures and discussion on a great diversity of topics. If you are someone who enjoys learning about what is happening in the world around you, being introduced to new discoveries and exposed to new ideas, then join us and expand your horizons!

To commemorate the Society’s 220th anniversary in 2022, a set of short videos was made to celebrate the Society’s development and the rich wealth of knowledge covered in its lectures.
History of the Society
In late 1802, a society was set up in Glasgow “for the improvement of the Arts and Sciences“. Its first president was a professor of astronomy and the vice-president was an ironmonger, thus representing the joint interests of science and industry.
Governance
The Society is a charity, constituted as a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Institution (SCIO).
Council Members
The Society is directed and managed by a Council of Trustees, elected by the general membership.
